In 1984 Tokyo, Aomame realizes she has slipped into a parallel world she names 1Q84, where reality holds unsettling discrepancies and unanswered questions. At the same time, Tengo, a struggling writer, is drawn into ghostwriting a strange novel for a teenage girl whose story blurs fact and fiction. As their paths move closer, their lives intertwine with a cast of enigmatic figures: a violent religious cult, a wealthy widow aiding abused women, a menacing private investigator, and others who shape the mystery. In this surreal and unsettling landscape, Aomame and Tengo’s long-buried connection slowly resurfaces, pulling them toward a destiny neither fully understands.
