Set in racially divided Virginia, A Calamity of Souls follows Jack Lee, a white local lawyer who reluctantly takes on the defense of Jerome Washington, a Black man accused of murdering a wealthy white couple. Aware of his own complicity in a racist system and doubtful of his ability to overcome it, Lee soon realizes the case carries consequences far beyond a single verdict. He is joined by Desiree DuBose, a principled Black civil rights attorney from Chicago, whose arrival intensifies both the legal battle and the racial tensions surrounding it. Despite clashing backgrounds and approaches, the two lawyers must work together to challenge a biased prosecution and a justice system intent on securing a death sentence, in a fight that exposes the limits of Civil Rights–era progress and the enduring grip of institutional racism.
