Twenty-two-year-old economics graduate student Lili Marwan meets Aleksandr Petrov, a Wall Street banker twenty years older, in a New York bar. Their political convictions seem irreconcilable: she is critical of capitalism, while his escape from the Soviet Union has shaped his faith in free markets. Yet his intelligence and the intensity of their physical connection quiet her restless mind. Across a summer of argument and intimacy, their casual arrangement becomes harder to contain. Shared experiences draw them closer even as their differences remain, forcing Lili to examine the relationship between her ambition, pain and desire. She must decide whether protecting herself from loss matters more than risking a deeper attachment.
